Homemade Coffee Liqueur Recipe

If you love the idea of combining freshly roasted, freshly ground speciality coffee with the warmth of spiced rum, this Coffee Liqueur recipe is for you. Simple to make, smooth, and not overly sweet, it’s a perfect homemade treat to enjoy or share with friends.

Last year our recipe was for a Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur, so this year we thought we would give you a recipe that uses coffee made from various brewing methods. So this recipe can be made using Espresso (with water), Cafetiere or French Press, Pour-Over, or AeroPress methods for brewing the coffee.

In terms of the spirit used, while we’ve used local distillery Wharf Distillery’s Mixed Spice Rum, but of course feel free to use any rum or vodka of your choice.

Ingredients:

  • 250ml freshly brewed strong coffee* (let it cool slightly)

  • 100g to 200g brown sugar (adjust to your taste preference)

  • 300ml Wharf Distillery Mixed Spice Rum

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

*How to brew the perfect strong coffee:

  1. Cafetiere/French Press: Use 20-22g freshly ground coffee for 250ml water. Let it steep for 4 minutes before pressing for a bold and rich flavour.

  2. Pour-Over/Dripper: Opt for a medium-fine grind and a 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio for a richer coffee.

  3. AeroPress: Try the inverted method using 18g coffee to 150ml water. Once brewed, dilute with 100ml hot water.

  4. Espresso: Combine 2 double shots (about 60ml) with 190ml hot water, or 3 shots (about 90ml) with 160ml hot water for a robust brew.

Instructions:

  1. Brew Your Coffee: Start with freshly ground speciality coffee from your favourite local roastery AKA us! Create a strong, smooth brew. Allow it to cool to room temperature.

  2. Sweeten the Coffee: While the coffee is still warm, stir in the brown sugar until fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your preference.

  3. Add the Rum: Once cooled, pour in the spiced rum and mix in the vanilla extract for an aromatic boost.

  4. Combine and Store: Transfer the mixture to a clean, airtight bottle or jar. Shake gently to ensure all the ingredients are well combined.

  5. Rest and Enjoy: Let the liqueur rest for at least 24 hours to allow the flavours to meld. For an even deeper, smoother taste, let it sit for up to a week – if you can resist the temptation!

Serving Suggestions:

  • On the Rocks: Serve chilled over ice for a simple and refreshing treat.

  • Hot Drinks: Add a splash to your hot chocolate or coffee for a warming twist.

  • Desserts: Use it in classic desserts like tiramisu or pour over ice cream for a boozy affogato.

  • Cocktails: Mix it into Espresso Martinis or classic Black or White Russians for a sophisticated cocktail experience.

We’d love to hear how you enjoy your homemade Coffee Liqueur! Whether it’s in a dessert, a cocktail, or sipped solo, let us know how you made it and your favourite way to serve it.

Cheers and happy crafting!
