October is an important month for coffee. As you might have seen 1st October was International Coffee Day and this year’s theme is ‘Embracing Collaboration’ because of course our favourite brew is the result of wide collaboration, often unseen, among numerous actors across the global value chain, all working together to bring us that perfect cup, every day.
We made a quick list of all the people who make our daily coffee possible:
Coffee Farmer
Coffee Farm Workers
Coffee Processors
Fermenters and Dryers
Graders
Cooperatives
Buyers
Green Bean Exporters and Importers
Traders & Brokers
Distributors
Roasters (AKA William)
Quality Control (AKA William)
Packagers and Distribution (AKA William)
Baristas (AKA you! Or William if you visit the roastery)
There are also Sustainability Experts, and Agronomists who advise on environmental issues and how to improve the productivity of coffee plants. And so here's to everyone whose hard work ensures our beautiful beans get from farm to cup.
UK Coffee Week:
From 14th to 20th October is UK Coffee Week, and the aim again is to celebrate all things coffee and to bring the world of coffee together. Hundreds of coffee shops, restaurants, roasters and retailers take part every year by donating from every cup or bag of coffee sold, running events and competitions, and engaging their customers in this valuable campaign. Monies raised go to Project Waterfall working to ensure that all coffee communities have clean water and sanitation.
Coffee Offer – Buy One Get One Half Price:
To celebrate these important coffee days we have a Buy One Get One Half Price offer on our Timor Leste speciality Arabica coffee.
Our Timor Leste coffee is smooth with a low acidity and a pleasing finish. It has sweet notes and aromas of treacle and soft fruits. From the Letefoho region of East Timor it is grown by the 32 farmers who make up the Hatuhei Cooperative at an altitude of 1500 to 1600 MASL. It is a fully washed and sun-dried coffee from the varietals, Typica and Timor Hybrid.
Our new 2024 crop was given a cupping score of 86 making this an 'excellent specialty coffee'. Well suited to immersion style brewing of either Dripper, Aeropress, Cafetiere it also gives a good espresso.
We only buy our Timor Leste coffee from Kar Yee and Stuart at Karst Organics a UK company dedicated to directly exporting and importing specialty Arabica coffee beans from Timor-Leste, with a strong focus on supporting local farmers. Their mission is to foster relationships between coffee farmers in Timor-Leste and speciality roasters, minimising the distance in the supply chain. They prioritise direct connections and sustainability throughout their operations, and spend six months of the year in Timor Leste working closely with all their partner farmers.
This year’s International Coffee Day theme of Embracing Collaboration is exactly what Karst Organics do with their partner coffee farms in Timor Leste – they work collaboratively, supporting each other, to overcome the challenges of coffee farming, using traditional and organic methods, and the result are some really great coffees.
Timor-Leste celebrates the Proclamation of Independence
On the 28th of November 1975, after some 400 years of colonial rule, Timor-Leste declared its independence. Today the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste commemorates the anniversary of that historic event every year, so we have called our offer ‘Timor Leste Independence’ in honour of that day also.
This offer applies to all sizes – 200g, 500g and 1kg – until stocks last. Freshly roasted to order, as always.
